Do you need 4WD?
On Ohio winter roads, yes. A 2WD S or SV works only if you have an AWD backup vehicle. The Frontier 4WD uses a part-time transfer case with 2H, 4H, and 4L modes; we've inspected it across 12 lake-effect-snow seasons and it holds traction on iced bridges where 2WD slides.
What are you towing?
Up to 7,150 lbs properly equipped covers most boats, small trailers, and utility loads. A car hauler with a mid-size car sits at the ceiling; for trailers over 24 feet or full-size enclosed haulers, you're into full-size half-ton or heavy-duty pickup territory — talk to us about the right tow vehicle before you buy the trailer.
King Cab or Crew Cab?
King Cab gives a 6-foot bed for solo contractors and two-person crews. Crew Cab gives a full second row for 2 to 4 workers (HVAC, electrical, plumbing) with a 5-foot bed as the trade-off.
Standard work trim or off-road?
The S 4WD King Cab is the volume work truck. The PRO-4X adds Bilstein shocks and a locking rear differential for off-road use, and the SL adds leather and the comfort features.

How does the Frontier handle Ohio snow and ice?
Northeast Ohio winters bring three driving conditions that test every truck we have serviced.
Lake-effect snow off Lake Erie
The Cleveland-Lorain shoreline gets heavy snowfall from late November through early March. On the Route 2 and I-90 corridors, 6-to-12-inch overnight accumulations are routine. A Frontier 4WD trim with proper winter tires handles it — and its truck ride height clears unplowed side streets and deep driveway drifts that leave lower crossovers bottoming out.
We advise Lorain County buyers to budget for a dedicated winter tire set rather than run the factory all-seasons through January.
Ice on bridges and on-ramps
Salt road treatments lose effectiveness below approximately 15°F. Bridges freeze first. They have no ground heat below them, so ice forms on the span before it forms on the road.
Pro tip: engage 4H at the bottom of the on-ramp before the bridge surface, not at the top.
Vehicle Dynamic Control (Nissan's electronic stability system) and Active Brake Limited Slip work across all 4WD modes. Both steady the truck if a wheel hits black ice on a Lorain County winter morning.
Salt corrosion exposure
Ohio applies salt and brine to roads aggressively from December through March.
We have inspected Frontier undersides at the 4-year mark. On exposed frame fasteners, brake-line clips, and cooler-line fittings, we see salt-induced corrosion 2 to 3 years earlier than on Frontiers operated in cooler markets.
Our standard advice: wash the underside at every visit, and pull the wheel wells once a year for an applied corrosion-resistant treatment. (We include the underside wash on every service order during the salt-belt months at no charge.)
The trucks we have catalogued under this protocol at 8 years still pass undercarriage inspection cleanly.

The 4WD system
How the Frontier's 4WD system works (2H, 4H, 4L).
You engage 4WD from a single dash-mounted rotary dial. No getting out to lock hubs in a Lorain County snowbank. We walk new owners through it on delivery: which mode for the I-90 commute, which for an iced Route 2 on-ramp, which for a boat ramp. The dash always shows the active mode. Here are the three positions:
- 2H — rear-wheel drive, for dry pavement and sustained highway speed.
- 4H — 4WD high-range, for lake-effect snow, iced bridges, and March slush at speed.
- 4L — 4WD low-range, for boat ramps, trails, and deep-snow extraction. Not for highway.

Common Lorain County and greater Cleveland trailer loads fit comfortably within the Frontier's tow rating:
- A typical 20-foot fiberglass bass boat plus trailer: 3,500 to 4,500 lbs total.
- A small to midsize travel trailer (16 to 22 feet): 3,000 to 5,500 lbs total.
- A two-axle utility trailer with one mid-size motorcycle, lawn equipment, or construction materials: 1,500 to 4,000 lbs total.
- A car hauler with one mid-size sedan or compact SUV: 5,500 to 7,500 lbs total. At or near the Frontier limit, you'll need to verify exact tongue weight.
For heavier loads — a travel trailer over 24 feet or a three-axle equipment trailer — a full-size half-ton or heavy-duty pickup is the better call than any midsize. Tell us what you tow and we'll point you to the right truck, even if it isn't a Frontier.
But for the weekend towing, home projects, and contractor work most Lorain County owners do, the Frontier has the capability covered.

Which Frontier is best for work trucks and fleets?
Over the last 12 years, I-90 Nissan has configured the Nissan Frontier for three types of Lorain County operators:
- Solo contractors — King Cab S 4WD. The 6-foot bed carries tools and materials, and the enclosed cab keeps gear secure or seats an occasional passenger. It's the lowest-cost trim in the lineup, which is why it's the volume work truck.
- 2-to-4-person crews — Crew Cab SV 4WD. A full 4-seat cab, with a 5-foot bed as the trade-off. It's the local pick for HVAC, electrical, and plumbing outfits. If you're hauling tall ladders or full sheets of plywood, the longer King Cab bed is the better call.
- Fleet buyers — King Cab S 2WD. For lower-snow routes: lower cost and a bit more payload than the 4WD. It suits indoor-loading operations and southern-Ohio routes, or fleets that keep a few 4WD trucks in reserve for winter.

Nissan Frontier vs. Toyota Tacoma: which is better for Ohio?
The Toyota Tacoma is the Frontier's closest competitor in the midsize truck segment. The clearest split is under the hood:
- Frontier — a naturally aspirated 3.8L V6 producing 310 hp.
- Tacoma — a 2.4L turbocharged four-cylinder, with an optional hybrid.
The V6 delivers power the traditional way — a smoother, more predictable pull under a loaded trailer.
